Who has to take Smart Choices?

Under The Liquor and Gaming Control Act, all managers, security, and staff who serve or sell liquor must take responsible service training.

Service Establishments: Effective January 2, 2017, managers, security and staff who do not already have Serving It Safe or It’s Good Business training must successfully complete Smart Choices before starting to work in a licensed service establishment.

Retail Establishments: As this is a new requirement for retail licensees, managers, security, staff and delivery drivers who currently work in licensed retail establishments will have a one-year grace period to complete responsible service training. The LGA will begin to inspect retail premises for compliance with this training requirement effective January 1, 2018.
